January 2026 Project Update

February 2, 2026

The Sherbourne Valley Project has reached an important moment to pause, reflect, and share how far the work has come. Over the past year, activity across the valley has continued to grow, with practical restoration, volunteering, community engagement and creative interpretation all helping to reconnect Coventry with the River Sherbourne. This latest project update highlights both the visible changes on the ground and the quieter work of building skills, partnerships and long-term stewardship.

The recording of this project update captures the breadth of delivery across the valley. We discuss the delivery of work at key sites including Coundon Wedge, Lake View Park, Charterhouse and the City centre. It offers a snapshot of how restoration, access improvements, events and training are all contributing to our shared aim of making nature more accessible for people and for wildlife. For anyone new to the project, the video provides a clear introduction to the project’s purpose; and for those already involved it reflects the collective effort that has made this progress possible.

Alongside physical restoration, the update also reflects on the scale of community involvement to date. Throughout the project, we have delivered a total of 1119 events, volunteering sessions, and training sessions to engage and support local communities. Our volunteers have given 7035 hours of their time to support the project and their local green spaces, altogether valued at £140,700 worth of support! These contributions are central to the project’s success and to its future legacy, helping to ensure that care for the Sherbourne continues well beyond the life of the project. As the project looks ahead, this update also sets out what comes next, from further habitat improvements and interpretation, to developing skills, leadership and ownership within the community.

In March 2025, we will be carrying out restoration works in Charterhouse Heritage Park with approved contractors. The project aims to re-naturalise the River Sherbourne which flows through Coventry, improving it for nature and for local communities. There will be several elements to this particular restoration project, all of which will have a positive effect on the river and surrounding area in both short-term and long-term scenarios.

In November 2024, we will be carrying out restoration works in Lake View Park with approved contractors Ecolibrium Environmental Contracting Ltd. The project will have multiple elements, including on-river and off-river restoration, which will improve features for people and nature.
